Steve is an active and involved member of our community. He was elected to the St. Paul School Board in 2015 and currently serves as Vice-Chair. Previously, he was a member of the St. Anthony Park Elementary School Site Council, a board member of the nonprofit organization Community Shares Minnesota, and church councilor at Mayflower Church UCC. He was also a commissioner on the St. Paul Civil Service Commission and a former commissioner of the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission.
Steve is the son of a union truck driver and was the first in his family to go to college. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A degree in history and earned his law degree from New York University. An attorney, he worked for the University of Minnesota, overseeing the law school career development office, has provided pro bono services to many clients in need and now serves as the Public Service Director for the Minnesota State Bar Association. Earlier in his career, Steve represented families and children in special education proceedings, as well as African American parents and children in school desegregation litigation in Michigan.
Steve is the proud father of two sons - Andrew, a graduate of Central High School and freshman at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and Ethan, a sophomore at Central - and the husband of Jodi Sandfort, a Professor at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Steve and his family reside in the Summit-University neighborhood of St. Paul.
